New test standard for cables in moving applications guarantees reliability in maritime use
To allow cables to be used for moving applications on ships and offshore applications without the need for time-consuming and cost-intensive special approvals, igus SE & Co. KG and the DNV classification company developed a new test procedure. As a result, a total of 387 chainflex cables from igus have now received type approval for permanent movement in e-chains. This makes them the first cables in the world specifically for applications in energy chains to receive this approval.
To supply safe and suitable products for this special area of application, igus SE & Co. KG from Cologne has developed a new test procedure in cooperation with the DNV classification society and had its chainflex cables certified.
Development of new test procedure necessary
Classification societies, e.g. DNV, typically issue approvals that comply with international standards. In many cases, they refer to special specifications in terms of fire behaviour or other requirements, particularly for materials.
The specialised knowledge of the two companies over a long certification period of more than three years with the most diverse areas of investigation has led to the first-ever certification of cables for use in energy chains on ships and offshore applications.

What challenges and what advantages do automation and digitalisation present for the maritime industry? How can companies meet the strict test criteria to have components certified by competent institutions such as DNV GL? What opportunities arise for suppliers, plant constructors, and operators of drilling platforms and ships from the use of certified components such as cables?

NEK 606 is a Norwegian standard for cables in offshore applications. 301 chainflex cables fulfil the requirements of the NEK 606 standard.

The latest generation of rol e-chain P4.1 with smart sensor
The roller energy chain has been the tried-and-tested energy supply for long travels for about 20 years. Besides the successful design that distinguishes all of our linear energy chain systems, stainless steel rollers are added, which upgrade the energy chain to energy supply for heavy-duty applications. As the energy chain rolls and does not glide, it runs quietly and with low vibration. Wear is significantly lower than for designs without rollers, and the power needed for movement is also lower by as much as 57%.
