Butchers & Bikes, based in Copenhagen's butchers' neighbourhood, manufactures sporty cargo bikes that allow you to lean dynamically into bends thanks to patented built-to-tilt technology. The design reduces the risk of tipping over and provides a lot of riding pleasure, as the usual braking before bends and subsequent cumbersome starting are no longer necessary.

Problem

For the bearing points in the tilting mechanism and on the steering rods, the designers were looking for alternatives to the usual metal bearings. The main requirement: the smallest possible dimensions to fit into the slim design and reduce production costs. In addition, the components had to be able to withstand the constant load caused by impacts, the transport weight and the changing weather conditions with wind, sun, snow and frost.

Solution

Butchers & Bicycles opted for plain bearings made of wear-resistant iglidur® material. The decisive advantage of the plastic bushings for the designers was that they require far less space than other bearing solutions. With them, the production costs could be reduced, as simple sheet metal frames could be used for the surrounding construction. Tolerances, the design and the production methods fit together perfectly. The absence of external lubricants is an added bonus for bike owners, who don't have to worry about regular bearing maintenance.
