Uninterruptible power transmission at the tidal turbine
Profile
What was needed: energy supply from the turbine to the control cabinet
Requirements: wear resistance, corrosion-free, insensitive to salt water, cost-effective
Area of application: renewable/hydro energy sector
Tocardo is a company in the Netherlands that specialises in the development of tidal turbines. The ambitious company has set itself the goal of becoming a leading player in the marine renewable energy market. Their focus is on reducing the life cycle costs of tidal turbines, minimising risk in construction and increasing power generation at the same time. The turbines can be controlled independently of each other so that power generation can continue even if individual turbines fail.
Problem
The developers at Tocardo were looking for a way to safely route the cables from the turbine to the converter in the control cabinet and thus maximise the service life of the system. The cable carrier system needed to be as robust and flexible as possible so that it could be used in different locations. Downtimes for maintenance should be minimised.
Solution
The cable carrier experts at igus® were contacted and found the perfect solution: our e-chain® E4/4 of the 40/40 series ensure uninterrupted transmission of the generated energy in the demanding environment. They are corrosion-resistant and insensitive in persistently humid environments and are particularly gentle on cables thanks to their wide crossbar and defined bend radius. They are also easy to install - and if a cable needs to be replaced, the crossbar can be quickly and easily pressed on with a screwdriver.
