Container terminal by the water: A large container ship is moored at the quay, a yellow container crane towers above it; stacked containers can be seen on the ship, and other port facilities can be seen in the background. The visual shows the typical application for shore power in the port - where ships can be supplied with electrical energy from the quay during their lay time to replace on-board generators and reduce emissions and noise at the terminal.

Information on shore power supply for container terminals

Key data on shore power for container terminals

The icon shows (in white letters on an orange background) the letters "MVA". Above the three letters there is a white lightning bolt on an orange background. In this context, "MVA" stands for megavolt-amperes and refers to the system capacity of a shore power system.

7.5MVA

The icon shows the letters "K" and "V" in white letters on an orange background. This is the marking of high voltage or mains connection voltages for shore power systems in the harbour and at the quay wall.

6.6kV

Symbol for the rate of change of current (dI/dt), i.e. current rise/fall. Ideal for electrical engineering, power electronics and protection technology.

16kA/s

Icon for shore power supply at the container terminal: on the left a connection socket/socket box, on the right two connectors (2-connector configuration) - shows the required connector configuration for connection to shore power.

Challenges for container terminals

IEC 80005-1 (Annex D for container ships)

Essential requirements for container terminals and container ships:

  • The cable management system is on board the ship.
  • The nominal voltage of the system is 6.6kV.
  • For outputs up to 7.5MVA, two parallel connection cables are used.
  • The plug-in connectors have a standardised configuration with three main phases, one protective earth (PE) and three pilot contacts.
